Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, goat farmers and life partners from Sharon Springs, N.Y., won the $1 million prize in season 21 of ‘The Amazing Race’.
Everyone loves and underdog triumphing, don’t they? And Josh and Brent were certainly underdogs for most of this season. They never won a challenge and even came last in a non-elimination leg. But they won out in Sunday’s two-hour finale, largely because of a memory challenge at the end of the race.
“When we stepped on the mat, we could not believe it. There were so many great competitors, and everybody starts at the starting line with a certain set of skills and strengths and weaknesses. You never know what combination of skills and luck will get you to the finish line, and that was our time,” Brent told The Hollywood Reporter.
If we believe Josh, they had a deliberate strategy to conserve their energies and not go out to win every leg. No, I don’t buy that, either.
But now they have won, the couple plan to pay off the mortgage on their goat farm and buy a place to get their food line started, the profits of which will go to other small American farmers. I always knew they were nice guys!
They said the knowledge of an alliance between the other teams really motivated them, after it was initially upsetting to be on the outside.
Never the fittest or most physical team, Josh and Brent credit their success with the work they put into their relationship prior to going on to the show. Together 14 years, they specifically ran through scenarios they were likely to encounter in the race and discussed how they would help each other through them, dealing with the other’s emotions and their own.
All that hard work apparently paid off. The Fabulous Beekman Boys said some people were surprised they didn’t bicker because they see how much they bicker on their cooking show. But Brent said, “You can bicker about the little things, but you can’t bicker about the big things, and ‘Amazing Race’ was a really big thing.”
Now the two can look forward to their wedding in the spring. Presumably some of the $1 million prize money will help them have a fabulous big day.
