A jury has heard that a man accused of fatally stabbing a man during a road rage incident in the Hutt Valley admits responsibility, but says he was acting in self-defence.
Shayd Robinson, 20, is before the High Court at Wellington charged with murdering Aaron Hadfield in January this year.
Crown prosecutor Ian Murray told the jury on Monday that Mr Robinson and another man took exception to the way Mr Hadfield was driving as they crossed a street in Stokes Valley.
He said Mr Hadfield backed up after they yelled abuse at him and Mr Robinson began hitting him through the car window.
The court was told Mr Robinson said to police Mr Hadfield grabbed him through the car window, then produced a knife and at some point in the struggle Mr Robinson picked up the knife and stabbed him.
Mr Robinson’s lawyer said his client had never denied stabbing Mr Hadfield, but said he felt threatened and acted in self-defence.
The trial is set down for two weeks.
