house series finale:

How does one of the edgiest, most antagonistic characters in series television history say goodbye?
Pretty much in the same fashion he said hello.
Anything else would ring false for Dr. Gregory House, and title star
Hugh Laurie and series creator and executive producer
David Shore are determined to see him end true to form as the FOX medical drama
"House" wraps up its eight-year run Monday, May 21. Don't expect major reassessments or revelations by the central figure, then, just a final and familiar round of sass and snark. And, very probably, one last swath of professional brilliance.
"It would almost be one of House's many mantras that people don't change, generally speaking," Laurie tells
Zap2itas a two-time winner of Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Television Critics Association Awards who also became a producer as the series proceeded.
"It's certainly true in television drama. They can't change, actually. If they do, you wind up with a different show from the one you started with, and that gets economically and logistically difficult.
"I've always felt that one of the distinctions between film and television is that in film, by and large, the main characters change, and the world doesn't," Laurie adds. "In television, the main characters stay the same, and the world changes, and I think it's important that House remains uncompromised. There is a defiance about him that's a kind of strength, and even though it might be belligerent at times, I find it inspiring. He will not suddenly give into the sentimental, even at the end of the show. I find that uplifting, in a twisted and dark way."
So does Shore, who admits "my mind's refusing to wrap itself around the idea" that the series is ending, though the February decision and announcement gave him the time to write a final "House" script the way he wanted to.
"I really have lived with this character. It's a very strange thing. It has affected me in ways that I won't really know until I'm completely done with it, and I think Hugh is likely having a similar experience."
The way an actor plays a part can add that extra something that makes it classic, and clearly, Laurie as House is such a case. "That was a beautiful moment for me," Shore recalls of his creation first being brought to life so indelibly. "We had met with a lot of people, and nobody got it, at least not the way I did. And I was starting to get scared that maybe I'd written someone who doesn't, or can't, actually exist.
"Then Hugh came in and read, and it was so radically different from everybody else, and the interpretation was exactly what I'd hoped for. I'm not even sure I'd seen it in my head quite that way. When he read it, all you could do was go, 'Yeah. That's it.' I'd loved his comedy, so I had very much a preconceived notion of him, and I was very surprised."
Knowing it takes more than one character to make a series - particularly one built around somebody so relatively unsympathetic - Laurie credits his acting colleagues as major elements of the longevity and success "House" has had.
"The last five episodes featured a lot of extremely powerful stuff for
Robert Sean Leonard (alias Dr. James Wilson), to which he rose magnificently. One of the great things about being in a scene with someone is that you get the best seat in the house, and I got to see him doing his thing ... and I came away thinking I didn't know of a film or another television show where I've watched an actor that good do something that well. And I can say the same about the other regulars who have been in the show. It's been amazing to work with them."
The finale, in which a drug-addicted patient (guest star
James LeGros) triggers memories for House, will be preceded by an hourlong retrospective. Laurie says he'll be "immersing myself, possibly to the point of drowning" in a worldwide music tour in the immediate aftermath of "House," starting literally the next day in San Diego.
While he wouldn't rule out a return to American series work some day, Laurie realizes any other project will have a mighty task to match what he's spent the better part of the past decade on.
"To be true to what we've done, it would have to be a character who would make a worthy companion," he reasons, "and I can't really see that happening. I feel as if lightning has struck the tree once, and that's a rare enough occurrence that I should be standing under the tree and have another bolt hit. It seems very improbable at the moment - but of course, if something arrives in a manila envelope and I read it and I fall in love with it, anything's possible."

Foxs House gets a lovely send off Monday night, first with a one-hour retrospective, followed by the final episode.
Hugh Laurie and the producers managed to turn an irascible, foul-mouthed, always-in-pain doctor into a star, someone viewers were willing to watch week in and week out. "House" cast a
nd crew take a look back before tonight's series finale: "Bolstered by 'American Idol,' 'House' quickly became a huge hit. At the end of the third season - which remains the show's highest-rated - the producers blew up the formula and forced 'House' to rebuild his entire diagnostic team. It was the first of many bold (and controversial) storytelling choices. In Part 2 of our oral history, the show's creators and cast look back at the show's most memorable plots." Unstoppable Adele wins 12 Billboard Music Awards: "The 2012 Billboard Music Awards were doled out last night during a live telecast from the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas that was broadcast on ABC and hosted by the networks 'Modern Family' stars Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen. Of course, much like the Grammys, just a fraction of the 46 awards were given out during the show, which also like the Grammys played more like a concert. Although she wasnt in attendance at the show, Adele dominated with 12 awards, followed by LMFAO with six awards and Lil Wayne and Coldplay with four each." EW.COM
Were NBC and Sony Pictures
Television unwise to fire Dan Harmon from "Community"? "If NBC wanted to send a message to the creative community that writing and running your own show is a job without security, then by all means, congratulations on the impressive chilling effect. No doubt people will look at, say, 'Smash' and think, 'Well, they renewed it but changed things at the top. A mixed message there but no worries.' But now that NBC has ousted Dan Harmon from the recently renewed 'Community,' whats the thinking outside of Burbank? How about this: 'Holy hell, they took Harmons show away from him without telling him. Lets take that meeting with ABC.'" HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
Cannes selection "The Sapphires" gets a vote of confidence from Harvey Weinstein: "Just as Dreamgirls delivered an Oscar for another Idol alum in Jennifer Hudson, US trade publications are reporting that 'The Sapphires' - which earned a standing ovation following its debut at the prestigious French film festival on Sunday night - could snare an unlikely berth when the international awards season begins in December this year. One report in a Los Angeles newspaper claimed Harvey Weinstein, whose company The Weinstein Company picked up the distribution rights to the film, was overheard at Cannes saying; 'Have you seen "The Sapphires"? "The Artist" just happened again.'" DAILY TELEGRAPH
Andrew Garfield talks
about his Tony nomination: "I was brought up with sports, and that's a very specific way of seeing the world, and part of me didn't want to see the world like that. I wanted to be more tribal-minded, as opposed to pitting myself against someone, trying to win. I mean, there is such a thing as healthy competition, but I just really wanted to be a part of a community, part of a troupe. And awards undermine that a bit, because they're subjective. Who's to say who's better? We all see different things in a performance, because we're projecting ourselves. But it is an honor to be acknowledged, and ultimately, it should be treated as a celebration. And I am lucky, lucky, lucky to be doing ['Death of a Salesman']." VULTURE
Liza Minnelli will be honored at the Fred & Adele Astaire Awards: "After four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special 'Legends' Grammy, two Golden Globes and an Emmy, its safe to say Liza Minnelli is a top-tier superstar. On June 4th, the 30th Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards will honor Minnelli with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award show, which will be at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University, will also pay tribute to choreographer and director, Bob Fosse and Broadway dancer, Gwen Verdon. Fosse directed Minnelli in 'Cabaret' where she won the Oscar for 'Best Leading Actress.'" HAUTE LIVING

Monday TV: House Series Finale, American Ninja Warrior, Storytellers
May 21 2012 08:37 am ET
Along with the performance finale of Dancing With the Stars, tonight features the series finale of House and the returns of American Ninja Warrior and Storytellers. Here's what's on TV Monday.
The big item on tonight's schedule is the series finale of House, MD. After eight years at Princeton-Plainsboro Training Hospital, we say goodbye to the misanthropic, Vicodin-addicted medical genius Gregory House. The two-hour event will begin with a retrospective, followed by the doctor's final case. Is it lupus? Find out at 8pm on Fox.
VH1 wraps up the second season of La La's Full Court Life at 9pm. Later at 11pm, Season 16 of Storytellers debuts. This week's guest is the always fabulous Jill Scott.
Finally, NBC attempts to fill the void left by last week's Smash season finale with rebroadcasts of G4's American Ninja Warrior. The extreme obstacle course series kicks off its latest search for contestants in the southwest region. See who makes it and who fails spectacularly at 9pm.

Monday Morning Critic Joss Whedon & Firefly / Serenity House, M.D Series Finale The Dictator & Chael Sonnen
Every Monday morning, InsidePulse Movies Czar Scott Kubryk Sawitz brings an irreverent and oftentimes hilarious look at pop culture, politics, sports and whatever else comes to mind. And sometimes he writes about movies.
I was not really all that impressed this weekend with The Dictator, Sacha Baron Cohens latest, but not enough to want to write a review for it. Sometimes one is enough and when thoughts are similar Im not the type to just throw something out there for the sake of it. The one thing that bugged me most about the film, though, wasnt that it wasnt necessarily all that funny. It had its moments but it wasnt anywhere near as funny as Borat but was a step in the right direction from Bruno. But unfortunately one thing was apparent to me in the same way that Chael Sonnens book, which I reviewed for Inside Fights, struck me.
There are no new tricks from the man: just the same old foreign imbecile in a strange land shtick. Its the same as Sonnens shtick where he just becomes an ass, etc. Sonnen hasnt really developed anything outside his usual stuff and its kind of annoying as to read the same old when the non-showy stuff was significantly more engaging material. You can read it here if youd like.
I had the same feeling when I wrote about it in the Sonnen review, referencing a Borat sequel in that thered be no new way to do the same thing again, and I went into The Dictator hoping for something interesting with the whole fish out of water bit that Cohen seems fixated on so far. And that was the whole thing I kept thinking about during the film. Cohen has nothing new to say on a comedic level.
Its a bit annoying on a number of levels, mainly because Cohen is really talented as an actor and as a creative type. Hes a good enough actor to get a prominent part in a Scorsese film and nearly stole Sweeney Todd for a spell from Johnny Depp. Anytime hes been in someone elses film hes been stellar; it takes talent to come up with characters but its just as tough to play other peoples characters with equal aplomb.
The shame in all of it is that the film itself ventures into this territory, of the foreign man in a foreign land fish out of water tale, when the first 15 minutes of Cohen being a dickish dictator is way more interesting and intriguing than his tale of redemption and whatnot. It wouldve been more inspired to see him as a clueless putz, roaming New York City as a famous man, as opposed to being an idiot looking for a handout and seeing the world through the eyes of a poor man.
House, M.D Series Finale Thoughts
The one thing kind of fitting today is that House, M.D is going off the air after eight seasons of shenanigans. Everyones been dreading this day, of course, but it feels like it shouldve ended a couple years ago. I had a similar thought on Entourage last year and you can read that here, of course, and my thoughts are remarkably similar.
Weve had two more seasons than we really needed.
After season six, with the final episode giving us closure to nearly every major storyline of the past couple years, there was a perfect time to walk away. House gets the girl for real, et al, after a year of misery. Heck you couldve ended the show with the nuthouse episode that began the season, as House finally comes to grips with it all. There were a number of times when they couldve ended it well or taken it in a new direction; having House go to another hospital and mess with them couldve been interesting as well.
Instead we got two more seasons of the same old, same old. When the show ends tonight itll be with a whimper and not a bang. This is a shame because it deserved better in the long run.
A Movie A Week The Challenge
This Weeks DVD Serenity
Ive always thought of Serenity as a cinematic version of a third season of Firefly more than anything else. At the end of Firefly, and the beginning of Serenity, theres an entire season of events thats happened in the meantime that a bit of a disconnection happens from how the show ended to how the film begins in terms of character relationships. Its what I always appreciated about it: Whedon didnt just give us a film version of the television show nor did he directly follow the shows progression. He gave it some time and gave us a film about where Mal and the gang would be if the show had continued on, without being hosed over by Fox, as opposed to trying to either recreate or give a sequel that only fans of the show would be into.
As it was only fans of the show came out, as the film underperformed and talks of a franchise or a new series quickly died out,
Serenity is the sort of film that got Joss Whedon the ability to make
The Avengers. If he can take a television show with a unique premise and get all of the backstory of 13 episodes, some of which never aired, all fleshed out in a prologue that doesnt become overbearing with information then a film like Marvels superhero team up becomes a bit easier to look at in Whedons hands. And with $200 million riding on the line, lets be honest: a good chunk of this film isnt going to be allowed for a unique, creative vision that potentially isnt commercially profitable.
Its the one thing Kevin Smith said about The Green Hornet that rang true with that film that doesnt ring true with Serenity: the bigger the budget the more hands in the cookie jar, wanting to make sure its a hit. True creative freedom doesnt happen unless its a small budget or its your own money. Or youre Christopher Nolan. And with a fairly small budget for Serenity, estimated at under $40 million, Whedon had enough creative freedom that he gave fans what essentially was a series finale after three years on the air more than anything else.
Its a fairly easy film to get into, even without having watched Firefly. Malcolm Reynolds (Nate Fillon) is the captain of a futuristic pirate ship for lack of a better word. Theyre thieves and criminals, for the most part; occasionally they do good deeds while flouting the law of the Alliance of federated planets. Mal fought against the Alliance in a war for independence, keeping his brown coat as a reminder of what they fought for.
A rag-tag collection of criminal types, they bring on a doctor (Sean Maher) and his sister (Summer Glau) who are wanted by the authorities for unknown reasons. And theyve let loose a pitbull of a tracker in the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor). While Mal tries to run, and hide, from him hes also trying to find out the truth about his captives and what the Alliances main heavy is trying to hide from them thats buried inside the doctors sister.
Its a grand space western that deserved a bigger audience than it received. But as a Firefly fan it was an appropriate ending. Strong recommendation.
