After eight seasons, Hugh Laurie hangs up his cane as brilliant diagnostician Gregory House.

House has enjoyed a healthy eight-season run that included audiences of 20 million and more at its peak, four Emmy nominations for best drama and six for star Hugh Laurie.

Tonight, Fox wraps up Dr. House's tale with a two-hour goodbye (8 ET/PT) divided between a retrospective and the final episode.

Laurie, who created one of the more captivating characters of recent times, shares his viewers' sentiment: "I like him."

But why like a guy whose behavior can be downright antisocial, whether he's dealing with patients with mysterious, bizarre (though often surprisingly curable) symptoms, or colleagues on the elite diagnostic team he heads at Princeton Plainsboro Hospital?

"First of all, he's funny. That's an important ingredient to the way his mind works, professionally as well as emotionally. He's also entertaining, which explains why the character Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) tolerated him for so long," says Laurie, enjoying a breezy afternoon on a balcony terrace at the Chateau Marmont hotel.

"And there's something defiant about House. He just wouldn't bend to conventional demands of good manners or authority. He also wouldn't bend to fear of death or loneliness," Laurie says. "For all his morbid self-destructiveness, I tend to think there is something full of life about House."

The unsentimental House has been a totally different kind of TV doctor, nothing like the avuncular Marcus Welby, the heroic Doug Ross of ER or the earnest young surgeons of Grey's Anatomy. You wouldn't see any of them start to strangle a patient with his own medication line, as House did in last week's episode.

But patients will put up with a lot when a doctor has House's success rate. In a recent episode, a hospital pathologist demanded to be treated by House, based on his track record.

House's weaknesses, including an addiction to Vicodin and chronic leg pain that causes him to limp, helped humanize him, says Englishman Laurie, who perfected the limp and an American accent for the role. "Sympathetic instincts are aroused when you see people who are in pain. You want to heal them or protect them in some way."

By Jordin Althaus, Fox

Robert Sean Leonard, left, played James Wilson, enduring friend of Gregory House (Hugh Laurie).

From a different angle, series creator David Shore says, "He's a 15-year-old boy. He just does what he wants to do, which is a very attractive thing. We worked very hard to make it smart and funny, and Hugh is unbelievable in that role. I can give all the credit in the world to Hugh and I am."

House in a predicament

One of those immature stunts clogging the hospital's toilets with paper, causing damage to an MRI machine puts House in a predicament in the finale, as his parole for an earlier act of destruction is revoked and he is ordered back to jail. He is supposed to serve six months, one more than the life expectancy of best friend James Wilson, an oncologist who has cancer.

"House is faced with a very difficult situation with Wilson, and he assesses what his future should or will be. How does he deal with that?" Shore says. House has "always been a good friend. I like the fact that we're ending the series focusing on the House-Wilson relationship."

Strong characters such as Wilson and Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) make House a better character, he says. "He's only as good as the people who battle him. Any time somebody went toe-to-toe with House and won, and Lisa did that as often as anybody, it was great."

Over the years, House dueled with other able colleagues, including Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer), Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison), Dr. Remy "Thirteen" Hadley (Olivia Wilde) and Dr. Chris Taub (Peter Jacobson). They put up with a lot of grief, some humorous, some less so, to bask in his genius. (Morrison and Wilde will appear in the finale, as will Amber Tamblyn, who played med student Martha Masters, and Kal Penn, whose character, Lawrence Kutner, killed himself.)

"They thought he was brilliant, and they were just sponges soaking it up," Epps says. "Certain people and departments are above and beyond the rest in their field. House was that guy. The core of House represented the truth. He was always trying to get to the truth of the matter. That's one of the reasons people responded to the character."

Foreman, who became the hospital's dean of medicine during the run of the show, "tried to keep him within the boundaries of reality," Epps says. "House has a childlike quality, in that he's forever curious, and I think Foreman echoed the audience in the sense of: 'Hey, you can't do this in the real world.' "

By Justin Stephens, Fox

In 'House' are, clockwise from center, Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein, Jesse Spencer, Olivia Wilde, Peter Jacobson, Omar Epps and Robert Sean Leonard.

If House the character has demanded more from an audience than the typical TV hero, so has House the series. "It was about something. It tackled ethics and morals and existential questions of religion, sex, love and marriage. It took on a great many things," Laurie says.

"It aspired to take on big ethical questions: Is it worth using bad means to achieve a good end? What are you prepared to sacrifice to achieve a desired outcome? How much are you prepared to pay in psychic and moral terms to achieve good results?" he says. "House is a character and an idea that tried to test those limits."

Going out his own way

House premiered Nov. 16, 2004, to modest ratings, starting well short of hit status. "I just wanted a large enough audience so I could keep telling my stories," Shore says.

He got far more. Fox backed House in its early struggles, eventually giving it the prime slot after TV's most-watched show, American Idol. House's audience boomed, and it became one of TV's top hits. In its peak season, 2006-07, the show averaged 19.3 million viewers. The numbers have slipped in recent years, and the show is averaging 8.6 million viewers this season.

Shore, with Laurie and executive producer Katie Jacobs, decided to end the show this season because of uncertainties about the future in such matters as budgets and casting.

"My worry was, if it's not going to get resolved in time, and it was looking like it wasn't going to get resolved in time, we're going to wind up not being able to end the series the way we want," Shore says. "If we can't do it the way we want to do it, let's go out while we're still feeling good about it."

The time feels right to Laurie, too. "You cannot have a character on the ledge threatening to jump forever, because at some point the crowd gathered below is going to start to drift away. The guy's got to jump or climb back into the building."

Will viewers see that in the finale? "You probably will. House reaches a point at which he physically and emotionally confronts the question of to be or not to be. Well, I suppose I shouldn't tell you which way he goes," Laurie says, pausing. "You can probably guess."

A warehouse fire and a heart-wrenching funeral had longtime viewers of "House" sobbing, but by the end of the two-hour series finale, it seemed that happy endings do exist for Fox's 8-season medical drama powerhouse.

Spoiler alert: If you haven't yet seen the dramatic ending, you may want to skip ahead a few paragraphs.

House's drug addiction took a starring role in the episode, as he hallucinated his way through his deep-seated memories. Pained, he finds himself next to a dead former patient in a burning warehouse and thinks of letting himself burn alongside him. (Huffington Post)

When the coroner finds a body in the building's remains, House's funeral brings his close companions to remember him -- until he sends Wilson a text message. Yes, House faked his death to avoid prison and spend time with his dying friend. (E! Online)

While E! Online hailed the finale as "A fitting end to a wonderful series," Entertainment Weekly felt it fell flat.

house-hugh-laurie-fox1Foxs House gets a lovely send off Monday night, first with a one-hour retrospective, followed by the final episode.

Hugh Laurie and the producers managed to turn an irascible, foul-mouthed, always-in-pain doctor into a star, someone viewers were willing to watch week in and week out. The hit series 'House' comes to an end after eight years. Noah Charney talks to Lisa Sanders, whose 'Diagnosis' column inspired the series.

by Noah Charney | May 21, 2012 4:45 AM EDT

The hit Fox TV series House, starring Hugh Laurie as an eccentric medical genius, ends today after eight years and 176 episodes. The drama was inspired by Yale University School of Medicine faculty member Lisa Sanderss monthly "Diagnosis" column in The New York Times, who is also the author of Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis and a technical adviser to the show. We speak to her about how the show got started.

Describe your morning routine.

When Im writing I like to get up really early, because thats when Im the smartest. When I was writing my book and doing this on a regular basis I would get up at around 4 a.m. When Im just writing my column I get up around 5 a.m. Its only an hour later, but its a really important hour. I make a cup of coffee and come up to my office on the third floor of my house. I give myself a treat by letting myself read the newspaper, or at least a little bit of the newspaper. Then I force myself to close it and try to start writing.

What was the first medical situation that led you to see medical diagnosis as a form of detective story?

One thing you need to know about me is that Im not a huge mystery fan, but a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I dont read mysteries, just Sherlock Holmes, because of the way he does things. He thinks like a doctor. He wouldve been a doctor, if there had been diagnostic tests when he was around, or if it had mattered at all what your diagnosis was at the time, given our lack of therapeutic tools.

Theres this meeting that happens every day in every teaching hospital in the country. Its either called resident report or morning report and in it, internists in training and experienced internists go to this one room every day, and one or two patients are presented, and you walk your way through this mystery. When I went to that meeting, in my third year of medical school, I dont even remember what the case was, but I remember thinking, My god, these are doctors acting like Sherlock Holmes, doctors as detectives. I recognized this and it changed my understanding of medicine profoundly.

jill-sanders-teaser

Ben Stechschulte

Until that point I really thought that diagnosis was: there is a question, there is an answer, you have memorized it, you see the question, you put down the answer. One thing youre absolutely certain of is that one of those multiple-choice answers is the right answer. It gives you this sense of diagnosis as this very closed, set system, like math. But its not like that. For many patients, its not this multiple-choice list. Its collecting clues that make you look at what should be among the multiple choices. Its unlike anything we study to get into medical school or to graduate from it. So it was fantastic, a revelation to me.

How did your Diagnosis column turn into the House series?

Paul Attanasio, who worked with David Shore (the two of them created House), was a big fan of my column, and he was just looking at it one day and thought, Why cant we make this into a TV show? To use the lingo he used, it would be a medical procedural. Its a term usually used for law or police shows, on the ground procedure followed by viewers, the technical stuff. He said, Why cant we do that with medicine?

I think one of the great ideas that he had is that we dont have to explain medical technology or terminology, because it doesnt really matter if everyone knows exactly what were talking about. Its like Star Trek. You just say it and move on and we all sort of know what is means, more or less. Paul had this immediate understanding that it didnt really matter if people knew what these diagnoses meant exactly. All they need to hear was that it had something to do with the liver, you know. They just need to hear the thinking that went on around it. Thankfully, Paul had this observation and was a fan of my column.

He said, Well, its about this arrogant, irritable, drug-addled doctor who hates patients and loves diagnosis.

Were you involved at all in writing the series, or its pilot?

No, although several of my diagnoses are in there. Paul called me after the pilot had been sold to Fox and they had agreed to produce them. When Paul called me, I asked, Whats this show about? He said, Well, its about this arrogant, irritable, drug-addled doctor who hates patients and loves diagnosis. Thats a perfect summary of House. My thoughtnot what I said because Im not that big a foolwas that it cant possibly work. Then he sent me the pilot and I saw Hugh [Laurie] and I thought, This guys brilliant.

Do the writers begin with the diagnosis and work backwards, the way whodunit authors often do?

No, they write the whole story and they might have the medicine first. Its like this: do you know War Games? Nuclear war can exist as a plot, as a backdrop, but the story is actually about humans, about these kids. Thats the role of medicine in House. Its important, its part of the plot, but its a completely separate background before which the real story, the human story, takes place.

every-patient-tells-a-story-cover

Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis by Lisa Sanders. 304 p. Broadway. $10.19

They might choose who the victim is first then decide what the victim could have, what sort of medical problem. Then theyll ask me and the other two technical advisers, and we sort of compete for this, for symptoms and medicines. We set out to find a great set of disease possibilities. Recently I got a script and the writer said, Heres the storyline, and I just left holes that say insert medicine here. The show exists on these two separate levels. The goal is to get the medicine and the human story to reflect each other, to have something in common. The human story is the foreground.

What will most surprise readers of Every Patient Tells a Story?

Its changed since I wrote it. I started writing it a few years ago and it came out in hardback in 2009. So I think when I started writing it people were not aware that diagnosis was this process. I think House has been enormously effective at instructing patients about the hidden process that exists behind the seemingly smooth transition from being ill to being diagnosed. People now realize that while diagnosis may still be a one-liner, You have blah, that there is a process that gets people there. That used to be what I thought would be the biggest surprise. Other than that the importance of the patients story is the biggest surprise. Patients still think that what they have to say is unimportantthey fail to understand the importance of it to the doctors in making a diagnosis.

"House" cast and crew take a look back before tonight's series finale: "Bolstered by 'American Idol,' 'House' quickly became a huge hit. At the end of the third season - which remains the show's highest-rated - the producers blew up the formula and forced 'House' to rebuild his entire diagnostic team. It was the first of many bold (and controversial) storytelling choices. In Part 2 of our oral history, the show's creators and cast look back at the show's most memorable plots." Unstoppable Adele wins 12 Billboard Music Awards: "The 2012 Billboard Music Awards were doled out last night during a live telecast from the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas that was broadcast on ABC and hosted by the networks 'Modern Family' stars Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen. Of course, much like the Grammys, just a fraction of the 46 awards were given out during the show, which also like the Grammys played more like a concert. Although she wasnt in attendance at the show, Adele dominated with 12 awards, followed by LMFAO with six awards and Lil Wayne and Coldplay with four each." EW.COM

Were NBC and Sony Pictures Television unwise to fire Dan Harmon from "Community"? "If NBC wanted to send a message to the creative community that writing and running your own show is a job without security, then by all means, congratulations on the impressive chilling effect. No doubt people will look at, say, 'Smash' and think, 'Well, they renewed it but changed things at the top. A mixed message there but no worries.' But now that NBC has ousted Dan Harmon from the recently renewed 'Community,' whats the thinking outside of Burbank? How about this: 'Holy hell, they took Harmons show away from him without telling him. Lets take that meeting with ABC.'" HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Cannes selection "The Sapphires" gets a vote of confidence from Harvey Weinstein: "Just as Dreamgirls delivered an Oscar for another Idol alum in Jennifer Hudson, US trade publications are reporting that 'The Sapphires' - which earned a standing ovation following its debut at the prestigious French film festival on Sunday night - could snare an unlikely berth when the international awards season begins in December this year. One report in a Los Angeles newspaper claimed Harvey Weinstein, whose company The Weinstein Company picked up the distribution rights to the film, was overheard at Cannes saying; 'Have you seen "The Sapphires"? "The Artist" just happened again.'" DAILY TELEGRAPH

Andrew Garfield talks about his Tony nomination: "I was brought up with sports, and that's a very specific way of seeing the world, and part of me didn't want to see the world like that. I wanted to be more tribal-minded, as opposed to pitting myself against someone, trying to win. I mean, there is such a thing as healthy competition, but I just really wanted to be a part of a community, part of a troupe. And awards undermine that a bit, because they're subjective. Who's to say who's better? We all see different things in a performance, because we're projecting ourselves. But it is an honor to be acknowledged, and ultimately, it should be treated as a celebration. And I am lucky, lucky, lucky to be doing ['Death of a Salesman']." VULTURE

Liza Minnelli will be honored at the Fred & Adele Astaire Awards: "After four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special 'Legends' Grammy, two Golden Globes and an Emmy, its safe to say Liza Minnelli is a top-tier superstar. On June 4th, the 30th Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards will honor Minnelli with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award show, which will be at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University, will also pay tribute to choreographer and director, Bob Fosse and Broadway dancer, Gwen Verdon. Fosse directed Minnelli in 'Cabaret' where she won the Oscar for 'Best Leading Actress.'" HAUTE LIVING

9:05 a.m. EST, May 21, 2012|By Hal Boedeker, Staff writer

On TV tonight, a classic character bids farewell. "Dancing With the Stars" starts its finale. And the White House salutes songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Dr. Gregory House was a landmark character when "House" debuted in 2004 on Fox. It was as if an uncompromising cable character had wandered into a familiar broadcast setting. Imagine Tony Soprano taking part in "CSI."

After an eight-year run, "House" leaves the Fox lineup tonight. A one-hour retrospective at 8 precedes the final episode at 9. House treats a drug addict (James LeGros) and examines his own life. A softened House no longer needs a prime-time showcase. House thrived because of his edge.

"To me, he's a hero," Laurie said in 2005. "He's not polite. He's not someone you want to take home to meet your mother, necessarily. This is a guy in search of truth. Incidentally, that truth one day could save your life or the life of someone you love."

Lisa Edelstein, who played Dr. Lisa Cuddy, was more succinct. "I think he's hot," she said then. "He's a sex bomb."

He was hot. He isn't anymore in the ratings. But irascible House did bring class to edgy Fox. And he faces light competition tonight, so the ratings could be good. CBS is in reruns. ABC counters with "The Bachelorette," and NBC serves up "American Ninja Warrior."

The show likely to dominate tonight's ratings is "Dancing With the Stars," which will be just an hour at 8 on ABC. The three remaining celebrities -- Donald Driver, Katherine Jenkins and William Levy -- perform a dance selected by judges. Then they deliver the freestyle. The winner will be named in a two-hour finale that starts at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

NBC will throw "America's Got Talent" and Howard Stern against "Dancing" at 8 tonight.

PBS offers another concert from the White House at 9. Songwriters Bacharach and David receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Song. They are saluted by Lyle Lovett and Sheryl Crow on "I'll Never Fall in Love Again"; Diana Krall on "The Look of Love"; Rumer on "A House is Not a Home"; and Stevie Wonder on "Alfie." President Barack Obama presents the Gershwin Prize to Bacharach and Eunice David, the wife of Hal David.

Riley: Thanks for the interview with Shonda Rhimes, even though she broke my heart with the finale. Can you spill anything else about Grey's next season? Maybe if there is hope for April and Jackson?
Sure, we'll squeeze out this last bit of scoop, but only because we are still in too much emotional pain to do otherwise. "The chief, Owen and Callie are the only people alive and definitely still working at the hospital," Rhimes reminds us. "Bailey's husband is moving to L.A. Five people are still in the forest. Jackson and Alex have taken jobs elsewhere. April Kepner doesn't have a job. So, I can't give anybody reassurances about anything because we don't know who is going to be at the hospital next season."

Marcie: Loved the Grimm finale! Is it too early to ask for season-two scoop?
Well, since we've got some Grimm season-two info, of course not! The first episode of next season will be called "Bad Teeth," and yes, it is as scary as it sounds. Especially since Grimm is looking for someone to play a "saber-toothed killing machine who is virtually unstoppable." Yikes.

Brant in Chicago: Since network TV is pretty much done, it's time to focus on my summer pleasureTrue Blood!
We love the way you think! And we are just so in love with the sound of this new True Blood character: a slimy and conniving "vampire security guard" who has amused contempt for the person he's guarding. Whom do you think he's assigned to?

MORE: Which Canceled Show Will You Miss the Most?

Sawyer: Since CSI was renewed for another season, any chance we'll get Catherine Willows back for a couple episodes?
We have on good authority to believe that Marg Helgenberger would love to come back but hasn't been asked yet. How do we know? Duh, she told us! Don't worry, we've got a pretty good feeling we'll see Willows suit up again next season.

Brooke: White Collar please!
Tiffani Thiessen promises exotic locales in the next season of White Collar, meaning the show will start season four outside of New York. As long as it involves Matt Bomer in a bathing suit, we are in. And Thiessen tells us that we'll see a couple different sides of Elizabeth, plus more fun with Mozzie (Willie Garson), of course!

Over its eight-year run, "House" has been an incredibly affecting experience for its viewers. But how has it affected the cast? How have the cast -- and their characters -- changed over the course of the show? (Or have they?) Fox All Access went to the "House" set to talk with several of its cast members -- Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard, Omar Epps, Peter Jacobson, Charlyne Yi, and Odette Annable -- about how the show has affected them. The series finale of "House" airs Monday night, starting with a special "House" retrospective at 8/7c, on Fox.

House shuttered itself on Monday night. The first hour, titled "Swan Song," consisted of a retrospective of the series' eight seasons, 177 episodes, with lots of behind-the-scenes interviews with the crew and co-stars, some of them conducted by star Hugh Laurie, and a paintball fight. The second hour, "Everybody Dies," featured a typically baffling medical case for Dr. Gregory House, which was only a first-half-hour cover for what really mattered, including numerous guest faces from the past, and which requires in this spot a SPOILER ALERT. The final struggle for the life and soul of Dr. House involved him sprawled in a burning building, his self-described "smack-addled brain" having visions of previous co-stars, including Jennifer Morrison, Anne Dudek, Sela Ward, and Andre Braugher. Most of them engaged him in philosophical debate about his selfish view of life and career ("the only thing that ever mattered was the puzzle"), love ("I know you believe in love"), and well, his selfishness again ("you're arrogant, you're self-destructive you only care about yourself"). We were led to believe that House died in the fire, and had to sit through a memorial service featuring an urn that was supposed to have contained House's ashes, while Robert Sean Leonard's Wilson delivered the most impassioned eulogy, whose sentiments ranged from "He was a healer" to "House was an ass; he mocked anyone ... he was a bitter jerk."

After eight amazing seasons on the air, the popular medical drama series "House" is coming to an end this Monday, May 21 at 8/7c on Fox. We attended the series wrap party in LA a few weeks ago where we had a chance to reminisce with the cast and crew on an amazing run they had with the show. We asked if working on the series morphed the cast into hypochondriacs, plus, got a message for their loyal fans. Check it out here! For more videos like this visit www.nbcudirect.com

Lyrics: There is a house in Charming Town They call the Rising Son And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl And me, Oh God, I'm one If I listened to my mama Lord I'd be home today But I was young and foolish A handsome rider led me astray Go tell my baby sister never do what I've done To shun the house in Charming Town They call the Rising Son My Mother, she's a tailor She sewed my new blue jeans My sweetheart he's a rambler Lord he rides an old machine. Now the only thing a rambler needs is a suitcase and a gun the only time he's satisfied is when he's on the run He fills his chamber up with lead and takes his pain to town only pleasure he gets out of life is bringing another man down He's got one hand on the throttle the other on the brake he's riding back to Redwood To own his father's stake And me I wait in Charming Town The game my love has won I'm staying here to end my life Down in the Rising Son. From the season 4 Finale of Sons of Anarchy Season 4, Episode 14: To Be, Act 2 I do not own rights to this song.
